Principal's Newsletter

Welcome to the Wood Oaks Newsletter.  This is my primary means of disseminating information to families, so please check back often.  I generally update this page once a week, usually on Fridays, but will occasionally put out a mid-week issue if there is information to share that cannot wait for the weekend.  To subscribe to this newsletter, click on the orange bell below, click on the newsletter, and fill out the pop-up form.

Halloween at Wood Oaks (First Posting)

Wood Oaks will be allowing costumes at school on Friday, October 29 as long as students can adhere to our guidelines.  Read more here.

District 27 Schools Closed (Only Posting)

All District 27 schools will be closed on Monday, October 11 in observance of Columbus/Indigenous Peoples’ Day.  Schools will reopen under normal hours on Tuesday, October 12.

Active Intruder Drill (Only Posting)

As previously announced in this newsletter, Wood Oaks held an active intruder (Lockdown) drill this past Wednesday.  Teachers and students did an excellent job of following our emergency plan and creating a safe building.  Northbrook Police was onsite to run the drill along with us and was quite impressed by the plan and its implementation that day.

From Our Communications Department (First Posting)

The District 27 Communications Department is seeking volunteers to be part of a 60-minute Parent Communications Focus Group that will be held via Zoom at 7 p.m. Monday, November 8. We will discuss the District’s various communications channels (emails, newsletters, website, mobile app, etc.), as well as the strengths and barriers of parent communications.

If you are available and interested in participating, please complete this registration form by Monday, October 18. We will be taking a limited number of participants so that everyone has a chance to speak. The information gathered in this focus group will be used in conjunction with a district-wide survey to update the District's Communications Plan. Thank you for your consideration!

Home Testing Kits (Second Posting)

The Illinois Department of Public Health issued updated guidance this week. Please note that home testing kits will no longer be accepted for clearance of individuals who are displaying symptoms of COVID-19. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our school safe.

Wood Oaks Assessment Schedule (Final Posting)

District 27 has finalized its assessment schedule for the 2021-22 school year. Please note that these dates are subject to change.

  • ISBE Learning Renewal Interim Assessments* (Grades 6-8) (Oct. 25 & 27, Jan. 27 & Feb. 1, May 9-11)
  • Terra Nova Survey (Grades 6-8) (Dec. 9)
  • Illinois Science Assessment (Grade 8 only) (March 10)
  • Illinois Assessment of Readiness (Grades 6-8) (April 11-13)

*The Learning Renewal Interim Assessments are new this year from the Illinois State Board of Education. These computerized, adaptive assessments will be administered in the fall, winter, and spring to monitor student learning and growth. They focus on reading, writing and math, and function similarly to STAR assessments which students have taken in previous years. These short tests are unique, as they are customized to our District and focus on the standards that our students have learned up until the time of testing. We highly value classroom instructional time and have worked to ensure that this year’s assessment schedule does not result in an increase in overall testing time.

COVID-19 Dashboard (Final Posting)

District 27 has launched a COVID-19 Dashboard which can be found under the 2021-2022 School Year tab of the District website and also in the “More” section of the Northbrook 27 mobile app. This dashboard is updated by 9 a.m. each school day with a count of any positive COVID-19 cases that have been identified in our school buildings. The totals account for both students and staff. This dashboard contains the same information that was sent via email last school year, with some additional features such as a weekly history and total counts for the school year. Please note that contact tracing has remained in full effect. Close contacts to any positive COVID-19 case will continue to receive notification from our nursing staff, regardless of their vaccination status.
