Thank You! (Only Posting)
Just a quick word of thanks to all of our families who took the time to come to school and discuss our joint work around educating your children. As I walked around on both evenings and spoke with both parents and teachers, I heard some wonderful things about those conversations and some great ideas about how we could work together to strengthen the experience for home, school, and student. I am also so appreciative of the many of you who took the time to stop me in the hall, or stopped by the main office, to tell me how wonderful you think the teachers are and how happy your child is with their experience. I know the teachers work hard to make that happen and your appreciation means a great deal. Thank you.
Last Day of School (First Posting)
With the recent loss of three instructional days due to inclement weather, the last day of school will now be on Monday, June 10. Eighth Grade Graduation will still be held on May 30 as previously scheduled. May 30 will also remain the last day of student attendance for 8th grade students.
Erin’s Law (First Posting)
In compliance with IL State law, a program on child sexual abuse awareness and prevention will be presented to students on Thursday, February 21, 2019. The presentations will be made by Victor Pacini, author, songwriter, singer, and motivational speaker. He will be assisting our schools in implementing this mandate. His program is developmentally appropriate, interactive, and aligned with learning standards. He is native to the area and has presented in front of over a million students and parents in numerous districts in Illinois and nationwide. We are excited to have him join us on February 21.
The program is being scheduled in response to Erin’s Law, a State law requiring that all public schools implement a sexual abuse awareness and prevention curriculum for grades K-12. For additional information about Erin’s Law, please visit www.erinslaw.org.
The presentations will cover the following topics:
· Safe touch, unsafe touch, confusing touches
· Private body parts (parts of the body covered by a bathing suit)
· Good and bad secrets
· Saying “no” to unwanted touches
· Safety steps and reporting
These presentations are designed to empower and educate children in a developmentally appropriate, child-friendly manner. If you do not wish for your child to participate in this program, please email Mr. McElligott (firstname.lastname@example.org), informing him of your request to have your child excluded. A confirmation acknowledgment of your request will be sent.

For 8th Grade Families (First Posting)
The field trip to GBN to register for classes that was scheduled for January 30, but cancelled due to the extreme cold, will take place on Friday, February 22. The students will be transported to GBN in small groups at different times during the day to register for classes, have a student ID picture taken, and take a walking tour of the building. Please contact 8th Grade Team Coordinator, Cheryl Kinney (email@example.com), if you have any questions.
Word of the Week (Ongoing Posting)
In an effort to continuously expand the vocabulary of our students, we present two new words to the entire building on an every other week basis. On the opposite weeks, we have a building-wide focus on pronoun usage. On vocabulary weeks, students are exposed to these new words through teacher Canvas pages, our morning announcements, and through the lessons presented by teachers in all curricular areas. We have been doing this for a few years now and have seen excellent measurable growth in our vocabulary scores. Last year, we shared these words with families through this newsletter and received good feedback from students about using the words both at home and at school. We appreciate any support you can provide by making use of these words around your children in your daily lives. We are currently reviewing and then assessing student growth in this vocabulary enhancement effort. New words will be coming soon! Thank you for your partnership!
