Principal's Newsletter

Welcome to the Wood Oaks Newsletter.  This is my primary means of disseminating information to families, so please check back often.  I generally update this page once a week, usually on Fridays, but will occasionally put out a mid-week issue if there is information to share that cannot wait for the weekend.  To subscribe to this newsletter, click on the orange bell below, click on the newsletter, and fill out the pop-up form.

Newsletter Issue 2.1.19

Hot Lunch (Only Posting)

With our recent run of school closings, there have been three lost hot lunch days.  We are in the process of coming up with a plan for the lunches that were ordered on those days.  We will communicate that plan in the coming days.

Winter Sports Recognition Night (Only Posting)

On Tuesday, February 5 at 6 pm, all winter sports athletes and their parents are invited to our Winter Sports Recognition Night.  This event will take place in the Wood Oaks Commons and will feature remarks from the athletic director and coaches.  Please contact Athletic Director Chris Schneider if you have any questions.

GNCY Vaping Presentation (Final Posting)

Click here to see a flyer for a presentation on JUULing and vaping organized by the Glenview/Northbrook Coalition for Youth.  This event on February 12, which includes a taco dinner, is meant to be both informative and an open discussion involving both parents and their teens.  Please consider taking some time and spending an evening with your teen to discuss this important information.

Parent/Teacher Conferences (Third Posting)

Winter conferences will be held from 5:00 – 8:15 pm on Wednesday, February 6, and from 1:00 – 8:15 pm (with a dinner break from 4-5 pm) on Thursday, February 7.  There will be no school on Thursday to make room for these important meetings.

Word of the Week (Ongoing Posting)

In an effort to continuously expand the vocabulary of our students, we present two new words to the entire building on an every other week basis.  On the opposite weeks, we have a building-wide focus on pronoun usage.  On vocabulary weeks, students are exposed to these new words through teacher Canvas pages, our morning announcements, and through the lessons presented by teachers in all curricular areas.  We have been doing this for a few years now and have seen excellent measurable growth in our vocabulary scores.  Last year, we shared these words with families through this newsletter and received good feedback from students about using the words both at home and at school.  We appreciate any support you can provide by making use of these words around your children in your daily lives.  We are currently reviewing and then assessing student growth in this vocabulary enhancement effort.  New words will be coming soon!  Thank you for your partnership!
